Why do I need a Root Canal when I am not in pain?

Updated: Sep 23, 2022

Today my father visited the clinic for his regular dental check-up. I finished my examination and told him that one of his molars requires Root canal treatment. He paused for a moment and told me that he will come next week.

I was a little skeptical about my dad's decision. I felt that since my dad was painless maybe he thought a root canal wasn't necessary. We often come across patients who don't have any pain but would still require a root canal. Here are 5 reasons Why one might need a Root canal even when not experiencing pain.

#1- Just a Deep cavity

You can have a deep cavity with dead pulp tissue that usually doesn't cause pain till it's infected.

#2- Painless gum boil

When there is a recurrent or a constant gum boil next to a tooth even when you are painless it may be because of a deep infection inside your tooth. In such cases, your dentist may ask you to get a root canal.

#3- Mild pain only on biting

Mild pain on biting/ chewing will usually require a root canal.

#4- Mild pain only when the dentist taps on the tooth

The tooth should be painless when the dentist taps on it. If not, then there is an infection around your roots, when the infection is from the tooth then you will require a root canal.

#5- Discoloured tooth

You can have just a discolored tooth, this occurs during a trauma even without a cavity. Your tooth may appear brown/ black compared to the next tooth. In such cases, you will require a root canal.

More than 15 million root canals are perfomed everyear by dentist all over the world
American Association of Endodontists

Before deciding on Root canal treatment for your symptoms, the dentist will confirm it with an X-ray and a pulp vitality test. A root canal treatment saves your teeth from future pain and severe infection. Root canal treatment also has a very high success rate.
