The Right way to Brush Teeth

Brushing your teeth is a daily routine for all of us. But Are you brushing the right way? and What is the correct way to brush.

#1 Selecting the right toothbrush

Always buy a soft or ultra-soft bristle toothbrush. Never choose a medium or a hard variety. The type of brush will be written on the top of the pack.

#2 Wash the bristles of your brush thoroughly-

Keep the bristles under running water and wash your toothbrush thoroughly. DO NOT USE ANY CLEANING SOLUTION OR SOAP.

#3 Apply the right amount of fluoridated toothpaste-

Use toothpaste with 1000ppm of Fluoride and apply the right quantity. For children below 3 years use a smear/ rice size toothpaste, for children aged 3-6 years use a small pea-sized quantity, from 6-12 years use toothpaste covering at least half the toothbrush and for > 12 years use toothpaste for the full size of your toothbrush

#4 Brushing technique

Keep your brush at a 45-degree angle on the surface of your teeth and slowly and gently give back-and-forth small

vibrations and rotate your brush from up to down while brushing upper teeth and down to up while brushing lower teeth. DO NOT SCRUB THE BRISTLES AGAINST the surface of the teeth, this can cause damage to the enamel. If you are using an electric toothbrush you need not manually move the brush since the toothbrush vibrations/ oscillations.

To understand this easily let's spilt our mouth/ teeth into 4 sets- The right side upper, right side lower, left upper, and left lower teeth sets. Each set has teeth that had 3 surfaces- the outer surface facing cheeks, the inside facing the tongue, and the biting surface. I start brushing from the left side upper teeth as a right-handed person and go clockwise. The sequence will be left upper outer --> upper front teeth (outer)----> right upper outer---> right upper inside----> upper front teeth (inner)---->left upper inside---> left lower inside ---> lower front inside ---> right lower inside ---> lower front outside ---> left lower outside. Finally, brush the biting surfaces.

Never give any excess pressure while brushing your teeth, this can harm both your gums and your teeth.

#5 After Brushing Care

Once you have completed brushing, spit the excess toothpaste/ saliva and but DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH. Allow the fluoride from toothpaste to stay in your teeth for maximum protection against cavity. Make sure you brush twice a day for two minutes and don't eat anything after brushing in the night.
