Teething is a natural process, every child experiences teething. teething can be managed by home remedies, in the post let's understand what is teething? When your child may experience teething, the symptoms of teething, and how to manage a teething child.
What is teething?
Teething is the emergence of milk teeth in your infant's mouth.
When do infants experience teething?
Teething coincides with the beginning of teeth eruption. It usually occurs in the first 6 months to 1 year of your baby. Some babies may experience teething as soon as 4 months, some may experience it only after 12 months. This is an average physiological difference, there is no treatment required for the same.
What are the symptoms of teething?
Symptoms of teething include but are not limited to the following. Some babies may not even experience any symptoms. It is common for babies to react differently while teething. The symptoms prevail 3-4 days before the eruption of teeth and usually stop after the teeth erupt.
Chewing on objects- Babies start to chew on hard objects
Excessive drooling
Small swelling/ redness on the gums- indicates that there is a tooth below the area
Rash on face- occurs because of excessive drooling
Mild fever not more than 100 F
Irritability
Not able to sleep well
Rubbing their ears
There is no evidence to support that teething causes diarrhea or high-grade fever. If your child is having any of these symptoms you should visit a pediatrician.
How to manage teething?
Teething can be managed by home remedies, We don't recommend over-the-counter anesthetic gels for babies.
Comforting your baby by cuddling and playing will distract from the irritability symptoms
Teething rings can comfort the baby and are safe for chewing. Some teething rings can be cooled, read the package instructions before cooling. Never put the ring in the freezer, the frozen ring can cause rashes to the gums.
If your child is 6 months old, giving healthy food, like raw vegetables and fruits like melon, apples, pear, carrots, and bread (after the age of 1) can help the kid to distract from teething and encourage the habit of chewing. Avoid giving biscuits and rusk as they almost always contain added sugar.
With moist clean gauze or a handkerchief wipe and massage your baby's gum pads, this help in the eruption of the tooth and also helps to clean the gums.
Cooling gels and medicated anesthetic gels are not necessary for infants. Medicated gels with benzocaine are contraindicated in children below 4 years.
Wiping your baby's face with a soft cloth can help to avoid rashes that are caused by excessive drooling.
You can give paracetamol syrup if your child has a low-grade fever. Consult a pediatrician or a pediatric dentist before giving oral medication.
Teething occurs during the first 4 months to 2 years, symptoms of teething start 3-4 days before the eruption of the tooth and stop once the teeth erupt. Home remedies such as chewing food, teething rings, cuddling, and playing with the kid can help the child in teething.
