Side effects of delaying Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment aims to preserve the form and function of the tooth. It helps in the removal of infection inside your teeth. You can have severe consequences by delaying your treatment. Here are 5 reasons why you shouldn't delay a root canal treatment.

#1 Spreading of the infection

The infection within your teeth can spread to your gums, jaws, and face. This can be a severe issue. This may increase the pain.

#2 Continuous use of antibiotics

Waiting to get root canal treatment can result in the overuse of antibiotics. Antibiotics will decrease infection but won't eradicate the bacteria in the tooth. The ultimate solution for tooth infection is a root canal treatment/ removal of the tooth.

#3 Increase in decay

If your infection is due to a decay in a tooth, delaying treatment can cause the decay to further damage the tooth structure. Even though a root canal would clear the infection sometimes it would be impossible for your dentist to restore the crown to its original form and hence your chewing function would be compromised. In such a scenario, the dentist might advise removing your tooth than getting a root canal.

#4 Removal of tooth

Ultimately due to all the above-combined factors, the tooth may become unsavable and you may have to lose your tooth.

#5 Spending more money

One major reason why people avoid a root canal is that it's expensive. But once tooth removal is done, replacing it with an implant/ fixed denture would cost more than a root canal and crown itself. So don't be penny wise and pound foolish when you are deciding.

We understand that as a patient you can be skeptical or even worried about getting a root canal treatment, if that's the case read about it, research it on credible websites, and go for a second, third, or fifth opinion before deciding, but do not delay your root canal.

Hi, sometimes it is unavoidable, crowns fixed may come out, in such situations it is best to get the crown fixed with in 24-48 hours. In most cases the same crown can be fixed with the cement. Delaying re-fixing may result in ill-fit of your old crown and during these times your dentist may ask you to get a new crown.
